LESSON #13 – VERBS class -ERE

ACCENDERE – to turn on, to switch on

CHIEDERE – to ask

CHIUDERE – to close

CONOSCERE – to know, to get to know

LEGGERE – to read

PERDERE – to lose

PRENDERE – to take

SCRIVERE – to write

VEDERE – to see

VINCERE – to win

VIVERE – to live

The class “-ere” is very similar to the class “-are” which we have learned in the Lesson 8.

These verb have at the end “ere”. In order to conjugate them you need to cut off the suffix “ere” and then you add the suffixes from this table:

I: (io) verb + o we: (noi) verb + iamo
you (singular): (tu) verb + i you (plural): (voi) verb + ete
he, she: (lui, lei) verb + e they: (loro) verb + ono

Let’s take the verb SCRIVERE as an example (put accent on the underlined syllable):

SINGULAR PLURAL
I: (io) scrivo we: (noi) scriviamo
you (singular): (tu) scrivi you (plural): (voi) scrivete
he, she: (lui, lei) scrive they: (loro) scrivono

The same rule applies on the other verbs too (put accent on the red syllable):

ACCENDERE – accendo, accendi, accende, accendiamo, accendete, accendono

CHIEDEREchiedo, chiedi, chiede, chiediamo, chiedete, chiedono

CHIUDEREchiudo, chiudi, chiude, chiudiamo, chiudete, chiudono

PERDEREperdo, perdi, perde, perdiamo, perdete, perdono

PRENDEREprendo, prendi, prende, prendiamo, prendete, prendono

VEDEREvedo, vedi, vede, vediamo, vedete, vedono

VIVEREvivo, vivi, vive, viviamo, vivete, vivono

Pay attention to the correct pronunciation, observe the changes of the pronunciation which are regular for all the verbs above. But there is also a group of verbs which is conjugated regularly in the written form but the pronuciation is irregular, there is a mix of soft and hard pronunciation. Let’s see three examples and listen to the recordings. 

CONOSCERE – conosco, conosci, conosce, conosciamo, conoscete, conoscono

LEGGEREleggo, leggi, legge, leggiamo, leggete, leggono

VINCEREvinco, vinci, vince, vinciamo, vincete, vincono
